The Unveiling of the Ford Mustang in 1964
With its long bonnet, short deck and sporty features, the iconic Mustang hit the sweet spot in the markets and dealers accepted 22,000 orders on the first day of sales.
The car went on-sale at a price of 2,368 USD, and it boasted a six-cylinder engine with three-speed automatic transmission and seated four passengers.
Ford anticipated that Mustang would sell around 100,000 cars in its first year, but it actually racked up 417,000 sales in its first 12-months, moreover, the one millionth Mustang was sold by the year 1966.
Capturing the Spirit of a Generation from a Concept to Worldwide Icon
What was so special about the Mustang? As the 15-29 age group was expected to grow 40% around the world between the years 1960 and 1970, Ford outlined strategies for a new kind of vehicle, one that would appeal to the younger generation who are not interested in the conservative cars their parents owned.
So Ford determined that this new vehicle should be small, light, and inexpensive. Not to mention the styling that needed to give off a vibe of a fun to drive car.
Customization with Ford Mustang Gives an Unmatched Experience
Part of Mustang’s identity was that it could be whatever the buyer wanted, from a basic, no-frills vehicle to an outrageously powerful sports vehicle or even a luxurious one.
Over the years, Ford Mustang has gotten longer, lower, wider and more powerful. It has seen some drastic styling changes which means new competitors, and it has gone from a US-only model to a global car sold in 140-plus markets.
Throughout those 60 years of sale, Mustang has preserved its appeal and popularity, taking its place at the top of the sportscar sales list with more than one million sales globally since the year 2015, and around 10 million since 1964.
