In an effort to reduce traffic and accidents in Jordan, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) has activated the traffic points system No. 31, in accordance with Paragraph (A) of Article (52) of Traffic Law No. 49. The Security Directorate aims through this system to enhance traffic conditions on the streets of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. In this article, we will explain what this system is about, how it works, and the violations it covers. Follow us to know all the details.
About the system
The traffic points system is a way to record all information related to traffic violations and accidents committed by a driver. This system relies on traffic points, which are considered to be grades added to a driver's record when they commit one of the traffic violations specified in the fifth article of the system.
Which violations are recorded in this system?
The fifth article of the system indicated some violations to be covered by the traffic points system, which come as follows:
Violation |
Points |
Driving against traffic on roads separated by a median island | 4 Points |
Running red lights | 4 Points |
Exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 50km | 4 Points |
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs impairing control | 4 Points |
Driving recklessly on the road | 3 Points |
Overtaking at places where overtaking is prohibited | 3 Points |
Driving against traffic or violation of “Don’t Pass Sign” | 3 Points |
Double parking of the vehicle on roads within cities | 1 Point |
Driving a motorbike without wearing helmets for the driver and passenger | 2 Points |
Driving an overweight cargo vehicle |
2 Points |
What happens when a driver commits more than one violation simultaneously?
If the driver commits more than one of the violations indicated in the table above at the same time, the traffic points are recorded for the higher violation.
Suspending a driver's license
The system states that the driver's license suspension is determined based on the traffic points recorded for each driver, namely:
- Driving licenses are subject to a 60-day suspension if the points per year get to 16
- Driving licenses are subject to a 90-day suspension if the points per year get to 20
- Driving licenses are subject to a 120-day suspension if the points per year get to 24
- Driving licenses are subject to a 180-day suspension if the points per year get to 28
When are traffic points deleted?
The Public Security Directorate (PSD) indicated that points that have been passed a year are deleted altogether.
The traffic points system in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan aims to improve traffic conditions, reducing both the frequency and severity of accidents to ensure a safe and risk-free environment.
