Leapmotor Unveils LEAP 5.0 Architecture and CTC 3.0 Battery at Tech Day

At its Hu Zhou Battery facility in Hangzhou, Leapmotor held its 2026 Tech Day on Wednesday, September 16, where it revealed a pair of groundbreaking developments set to shape its next generation of vehicles.

The company introduced its all-new LEAP 5.0 New Mobile Space Architecture alongside an upgraded Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) 3.0 High-Low Fusion Battery system. Both technologies form the foundation for Leapmotor's upcoming vehicle lineup, with production models expected to roll out starting in 2027.

According to Leapmotor, these advances represent nothing short of a transformation in how mobility is experienced comparable to the shift from basic mobile phones to smartphones.

A New Approach to Vehicle Architecture

The LEAP 5.0 platform marks a major leap forward in structural design, promising vehicles that make the most efficient use of interior space while incorporating smarter, more centralized technology. The first models built on this platform will debut in 2027. Compared to earlier platforms, LEAP 5.0 delivers full (100%) space efficiency through a unified, centrally managed control system, a setup better suited to today's electrified vehicles packed with autonomous driving features.

By merging the air conditioning unit and rear powertrain into a single combined unit, components that were previously kept separate, Leapmotor has managed to extend cabin length by 19%, cut the number of parts by 18%, and reduce piping needs by 30%.

A redesigned vertical shock absorber setup, built with an aluminum tower, takes up less space and intrudes less into the cabin, boosting front-row lateral legroom by 37.5%.

Perhaps the standout feature is the pairing of a raised roofline with a completely flat, lower floor, enabled by a new skateboard-style chassis. This combination increases interior height by an impressive 63.7%, resulting in a bright, loft-like cabin where passengers can stand upright.

This architecture is designed to serve as the backbone for every future Leapmotor product, beginning with vehicles launching in 2027.

Reinventing the Battery System

Leapmotor's Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) 3.0 High-Low Fusion Battery builds on the brand's earlier package-less battery technology, now adding the ability to handle low-voltage power needs, effectively making the conventional 12-volt battery obsolete.

The new system boosts low-voltage capacity and performance sevenfold compared to its predecessor, fully replacing the output of a standard 12-volt battery and removing the need for one altogether.

Once rolled out across Leapmotor's next-generation vehicles, they'll become the first production cars in over seven decades to operate without a lead-acid auxiliary battery, a bold challenge to the long-standing belief that such batteries are essential.

If adopted at scale, this shift could prevent tens of millions of lead-acid batteries from being produced each year, significantly reducing pollution linked to battery waste. Additionally, the system requires no maintenance over the vehicle's lifetime, meaning owners won't need to replace batteries periodically, translating into real cost savings over time.

With CTC 3.0, there's no longer a need for standalone battery modules, since everything is built directly into the chassis. High- and low-voltage systems now share the same cells, modules, thermal management, and energy distribution, a complete overhaul of how the vehicle's power system is engineered.

Historically, the 12-volt battery has been the backbone of a car's electrical system, powering essentials like the starter motor, wipers, climate control, lighting, infotainment, security features, and even the airbags. Stay up to date with the latest automotive news and reports by visiting the Motory Car News section.
